Chapter 27 – Ezekiel

Stormy sea waves crashing against ancient cliffside ruins with dark clouds overhead

Lament for Tyre

The word of the Lord came to Ezekiel commanding him to raise a lament over Tyre.

The Lord describes Tyre as a magnificent ship, perfect in beauty, crafted from the finest materials — juniper from Senir, cedar from Lebanon, oak from Bashan, ivory-inlaid cypress wood, fine linen sails, and costly coverings. Tyre became the center of trade for the nations, and merchants and sailors from across the seas came to exchange their goods there. Through commerce, wealth, and splendor, Tyre grew proud and powerful.

…Every ship and sailor on the sea
    came to you to carry on trade.
10 Persia and Lud and Put
    were warriors in your army;
Shield and helmet they hung on you
    to enhance your splendor.

~Ezekiel 27:9-10

But despite its greatness, Tyre would sink into the heart of the seas. Its riches, merchandise, sailors, warriors, and traders would all perish with it. The surrounding nations and coastlands would mourn and wail over its destruction. Kings and merchants would stand in horror, astonished that a city once so wealthy and secure could suddenly fall.

The lament ends with the nations trembling at Tyre’s downfall, for the city that once ruled the seas is no more.

Now you are wrecked in the sea,
    in the watery depths;
Your wares and all your crew
    have fallen down with you.
35 All who dwell on the coastlands
    are aghast over you;
Their kings are terrified,
    their faces distorted.
36 The traders among the peoples
    now hiss at you;
You have become a horror,
    you shall be no more.

~Ezekiel 27:34-36

A reminder to never place our hope or pride in material riches or in man. Tyre (modern-day Lebanon) was once a great and wealthy kingdom in the ancient world, yet its glory faded and its power passed away. Fear God, remain humble, and remember that His word and prophecies never fail.
