Chapter 9 – Ezekiel

The Vision of Slaughter

In another vision Ezekiel heard God cry out in a thunderous voice saying to the executioners of the city to approach it now each with their weapon.

Ezekiel saw 6 men coming from the direction of the Upper Gate each with a battle-axe in their hand. Among them was a man clothed in linen who had a writing kit at his side. They came in and stood beside the bronze altar.

The glory of God went up from above the cherubim where it had been and moved to the threshold of the temple.

Then the Lord called the man in linen and told him to go throughout the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on those who grieve and lament over the detestable things done in the city.

As for the other men – the executioners they were to kill everyone who does not have the mark. Old and young, men and women, mothers and children – everyone. They should show no pity or mercy. The men were instructed to start at the sanctuary.

God told the executioners to defile the temple and fill its courtyards with the dead! All while this was happening Ezekiel cried out because everyone was being destroyed.

“…Alas, Sovereign LORD! Are you going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel in this outpouring of your wrath on Jerusalem?”

EZEKIEL 9:8

God replied saying the wickedness in Judah and Israel is extremely great. The land is full of blood and full of perversion and injustice.

Then the man in linen with the writing kit came and said that he had done all that the Lord had commanded.
