Stubbornness is dangerous. A stubborn attitude, means that you’re not teachable. You’re unwilling to be humble and allow God to guide you.
Stubbornness will lead to death.
We witnessed stubbornness in the history of the Israelites.
Instead, they have followed the stubbornness of their hearts; they have followed the Baals, as their ancestors taught them.”
– Jeremiah 9:14
God called the children of Israel a ‘stiff-necked people’ because despite God’s love, patience, and compassion, they seemed to always be rebellious. They followed their own desires. Thus being described as having, “followed the stubbornness of their heart.”
Where does this trait stem from? There are multiple triggers. However, the source is a spirit that believes your way is best. This belief results in being unyielding and disobedient. A stubborn attitude with God means that God can’t teach you truth. God’s glory cannot flow through a stubborn person or nation.
Examples of Stubbornness
- Children of Israel whilst travelling to the Promised Land – we’re quick to forget God’s laws and instruction despite His blessing and deliverance for them.
- Exodus 32:9 – And the LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people.
- King Saul’s attitude – Not willing to surrender to God and obey His instructions
- 1 Samuel 15:23-26 – Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.”
Contrast that to King David, said to be a ‘man after Gods heart.’ Despite his flaws and failures David had an attitude of humility to God. David was quick to repent and had God’s will in mind.
And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.
-Acts 13: 22 (KJV)
If you believe enough lies your heart will eventually be hardened against God’s truth and stubbornness will creep in.
But rather God will honour your acts of humility
By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.
– Proverbs 22:4 (KJV)
Prayer
Heavenly Father I come to you with a repentant heart. Forgive me in any area I have been stubborn. Release me from being stubborn of heart. Help me to yield to you Lord. Help me to surrender to your will. Forgive me for thinking that I know it all. Forgive me for being stiff-necked. I need you Lord. Remove the spirit of stubbornness and show me aspects of my life where I need to be humble. Holy Spirit teach me how to be humble so that I may bring you honour and glory. In Jesus name, Amen.
