For we walk by faith and not by sight
~ 2 Corinthians 5:7 -NKJV
What does this verse mean?
For context, Paul is writing to the church in Corinth on the assurance of resurrection and awaiting our new heavenly bodies. In the verses prior, Paul mentions that while here on earth we have earthly bodies and when our earthly bodies die, we will have an eternal body. A body that God Himself makes for us. But in the meantime, in our earthly bodies we are burdened (by sin and life struggles) and our spirit groans longing to be clothed in this new perfect body. We can be sure that it is because we are not yet home with our Lord. But the time will come when we put off this earthly body for our glorious heavenly ones; for now we live in our earthly bodies by faith in what is unseen, and not by sight.
This verse reassures us that our christian walk is one that is done by faith. Trusting in God’s word even if the promises hasn’t been received yet whilst on earth because God will reward those who trust in Him and diligently seeks him.
Ultimately as Christians we look forward to our resurrection after the return of Jesus Christ, for though now on earth we walk in faith when we are resurrected and present with the Lord we will see clearly, have full sight and see fully manifested every promise God has in store for His faithful saints.
So while here on earth we walk by faith, knowing that this pleases God and God will reward us for our obedience in having faith in His word. The following verses drives this point home.
6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
~ Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
~ Hebrews 11:13 (NKJV)
I’m so glad that the verse says to walk and not to run. Walking is great way I believe to signify the pace that is to be maintained. Rather than to run where we could grow weary along the way. Our christian walk requires that we move forward in faith one step at a time.
